Caving in to public pressure or just a bluff? Duterte: I don’t think I need to impose martial law

Has President Rodrigo Duterte grown cold to the prospect of possibly declaring martial law? In his speech at the turnover of a drug rehabilitation facility in Samal Island Friday (February 24), Duterte said he does not see the need to resort to drastic measures even as he reiterated his resolve to “preserve the Filipino nation.” “I don’t think I need to impose Habeas Corpus, suspension, martial law. It is given that I will protect and defend the Constitution of the Philippines and protect the Filipino people,” he said. Duterte has sent alarm bells ringing since he assumed office by repeatedly mentioning the possibility of declaring martial law. He had said he may declare martial law if the need arises or if there’s public clamor for it. A survey conducted by Pulse Asia, however, found that 7 in 10 Pinoys disagree with imposing martial law to solve the country’s problems.
